The Experience
Gladesville Mental Hospital operated from 1838 to 1993, making it one of the longest-running psychiatric institutions in Australian history. This tour goes beyond the urban legends to reveal the true stories of patients, the pioneering (and sometimes horrifying) medical treatments, the social history of mental illness in colonial and Federation-era Australia, and the fascinating individuals who shaped — and were shaped by — this institution.
What You'll Discover
- Colonial-era patient histories drawn from admission registers
- Victorian psychiatric treatments and the rise of moral therapy
- Architectural history of the sandstone hospital buildings
- The social and legal history of commitment laws in NSW
- Contemporary perspectives on mental health institutions
The Research Behind This Tour
The Gladesville tour is built on years of work with original admission registers, colonial medical journals, and personnel records recently digitised by State Archives. Many of the stories we tell have never appeared in a published history of the institution.
